How to Support Children Through Major Life Transitions
1. Talk to your child about the changes that are happening and why they are happening. Answer any questions they have and encourage them to express their feelings.
2. Give your child as much information as possible about the new environment they will be in. Visit the new school, neighbourhood or city together and allow them to get comfortable with the new surroundings.
3. While some aspects of routine may change, try to keep consistent daily routines such as mealtimes and bedtime.
4. Give your child some control over the transition. For example, allowing them to choose the colour of their new room or picking out new school supplies can make them feel more involved and in control.
5. Talk to your child about the upcoming change and listen to their concerns and feelings.
6. Involve your child in the planning process, such as choosing their new room décor or picking out a new school backpack.
7. Visit the new location or school ahead of time, if possible, to help your child feel more familiar and comfortable.
8. Encourage your child to stay in touch with old friends while also making new ones.
9. Be patient and understanding if your child experiences mood changes or behaviour issues during the transition.
10. Keep communication open and check in with your child regularly about how they are feeling and adjusting.
